Madden
has an interesting viewpoint on essays. He begins his writing with a quote from
his college professor asking him what he was planning on doing with his writing
once he runs out of ideas. He gave a clever answer by saying that having children
provides plenty of funny and interesting stories. Being able to write from your
experiences helps create an eventful story. I find it interesting how he
focuses on foreign words that he had been taught. He includes words like “amanuensis” and phrases like “la vida cotidiana” and incorporates that
into his style of writing. I really enjoyed how he included bits and pieces of
different writers writing. It lets the reader, aka us, read others point of
views that isn’t just the authors. I found it interesting how he also wrote about the common topics that people write about like death and breakups and how his students couldn't move past writing about those kinds of topics. All in all, Madden is an interesting writer.
Read Patrick Madden's essay, "The Infinite Suggestiveness of Common Things". This essay can be found on our class webpage under SLCC documents. The excerpt comes from his book of nonfiction entitled Quotidiana.
