"Writing is an act of bravery. Writing often means facing your own darkness and light"
I really liked when she said this because I can absolutely relate to this. In my memoir I talked about some personal things that I had maybe thought a lot about throughout life but I had never taken the time to write down and explain to someone else. Sometimes writing things down isn't helpful but when I was writing I caught myself thinking of things I had never thought before, like "just the day before my mom left my dad things were normal I would have never been able to guess what was to come the next day". This is an example of me learning to do what you're trying to teach us and that is to ask question's, think outside the box, view things from a different perspective, etc.
I loved Sarah's whole paragraph "Perhaps we are afraid of writing because we're afraid of knowing our own story." This stuck out to me because we go through life so quickly, we never really have time to reflect on everything and to capture every moment. But through writing you do just that, you reflect and replay every moment. It makes you view the memory in a different way than you did the day the memory was made. When you go back and write you can connect experiences with consequences that came down the road or lessons learned that were learned due to an experience that happened 2 years ago and you never realized one happened because of the other, and through writing you begin to realize things you never did before.
Another part of this paragraph that stuck out to me was when she said "We're scared that we won't capture the ideas or know what to say". This is something I struggle with because when it comes to writing I am not very good with my flow and I never know how to put things into words, therefore I have a hard time being content with the way that I describe something because I question if the reader will understand, if I said it all in order, if I missed any key points, etc. But through practice and especially through this class I know that I will definitely improve.

Your paragraph that talks about being afraid of your own story really nstood out. It's so true! We all get caught up in life itself, and never really capture every moment that we would want to, but through the power of writing, we can cspyute every moment. Even if life isn't exciting, the little things we write bring back feelings and emotions of that day, and we will be so glad we wrote those "meaningless" events down.
ReplyDeletei also relate to this because when i read Darkness And Light, i thought about my ups and my downs and how i view it differently when i write it down opposed to just thinking about it.

Your paragraph makes a lot of sense after reading your memoir. I think it was good for you to face your darkness and write it down. Hopefully it helped you accept the hardships and appreciate them. :) - Hailey Brown
