Tara Furlong, Period 5

“I have permission to explore these ideas, without consequence.” I loved this quote from the passage because it stood out to me and made me realize how important writing for your own discovery is. Writing is just like feeling or believing. You shouldn't have to filter what you write; you should write whatever comes to mind. As a person, you can’t filter out your feelings. Of course, we may try to but it isn’t easy. Writing is similar. For assignments and work, we’re always filtering what we say, yet we should also take time to jot down all the wonderful things that cruise our minds daily. As a person we shouldn’t forget these moments, and as a writer we should bring them alive. “Speak up for something you believe in.” For me, these are words to live by. Too often it seems we are only writing to say something we are assigned or directed to say. Instead, we should write to express our feelings towards what we believe to be meaningful. Writing seems like a chore to so many people, and when I read this part of the passage I realized how much easier it is to write about something you’re passionate about. It is also much easier to bring your piece of writing to life and bring meaning to your subject. I think that is what is most important in one’s writing.

  1. I really like the way you stress the importance of meaningful writing. I agree that we, as students get stuck in a rut when it comes to writing because we do so much of it! Especially about things we aren't interested in.

I totally agree on the fact that you should not have to hold back while you're writing. You should be able to express yourself freely, and you should not have to worry about judgement. The world we live in today has this weird connection to the idea of judgement. We are so afraid of being judged by others, while we thrive on it ourselves toward others. It is so wrong to me.
