Parker Hill - 5th Period

I really enjoyed reading the passage from The Infinite Suggestiveness of Common Things. The biggest thing that stood out, to me, was that he included a lot of work from other articles. The first quote, "A quick ear and eye, an ability to discern the infinite suggestiveness of common things, a brooding meditative spirit, are all that the essayist requires." by Alexander Smith “On the Writing of Essays”, really stood out to me because the whole point of the passage was to realize that the simplest things in life can be some of your most amazing work. Patrick Madden said, "...Adriana, then almost three months old, began to laugh behind me on the bed. I turned to see what she was laughing at but could find nothing. Thankfully, I recognized the world whispering, put fingers to keyboard, let the ideas collaborate and grow". This really stood out to be because he said that a lot of his writing work would be based around his children when his professor asked him. I can see how the laughing child sparked his brain. Children really do influence us, and I just think it's amazing how he said his first piece of writing that is actually good came from it. It was teaching us that a memoir is like a polaroid picture - no words, no caption. It is literally just a small scene from a whole production that is expanded and has so much meaning.

  1. Parker, I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on this passage. You linked all of Patrick Madden's thoughts and applied them to your own life. You understand the point that he was trying to make, realizing that the little moments matter. You did an excellent job on this blog post, and I love that you used quotes from the passage!
